Tesla’s vision of the Internet

July 9th - 13th, 2012

From July 9th – 13th, in cooperation with the gallery “O3ONE”, the Register of the National Internet Domain of Serbia (RNIDS) and the Nikola Tesla Museum organize the exhibition “Tesla’s Vision of the Internet”. The exhibition is held on the occasion of 10 July, the birthday of Nikola Tesla, an American scientist of Serbian origin and one of the greatest minds of the 20th century.

Nikola Tesla in his project “World System” from 1900, in the words of the current technical dictionary, described in 12 points what is now called the wireless Internet, mobile telephony and GPS. Then, in 1908, he specifically described in the magazine “Wireless Telegraphy & Telephony”, the article “The Future of the Wireless Art”. His later forecasting of the future of communications in 1909 for the New York Times, reported by Popular Mechanics in the article “Wireless of the future”, some mobile phone manufacturers have used Tesla’s vision of the emergence of smart mobile devices in recent years.

However, when more comprehensively see what Tesla wrote and spoke at the beginning of the 20th century, the conclusion is that his words speak more about the technology of today that unites all aspects of communication and information transfer, which is the Internet, regardless of the specific device through which it unfolds. The idea of the exhibition “Tesla’s Vision of the Internet” is to show how Tesla mentioned everything that every today’s Internet user can access – whether via a computer or through a mobile phone. This was achieved by comparative infographics of Tesla’s visionary words and old photographs from Tesla’s time – on the one hand, and on the other hand, the description of information-communication technologies of today whose backbone is the Internet.

The author of the project “Tesla’s Vision of the Internet” is Lazar Boškovic, a multimedia creator from Belgrade, and the project besides the exhibition now includes an Internet site with the same address on both national internet domains, with infographics, useful links, and other materials on this topic. In the autumn, the English version of the project is planned, as well as other activities (round table, projection of films about Tesla…). The exhibition designer is Dušan Vojnov, from the “Orange” studio.
